Signalman Carr joined the Army serving originally with the Royal Signals, then transferred to 7 Commando and after training was deployed to Libya, where he was captured in April 1941. He was taken to Italy as a Prisoner of War, after the Italians surrendered, rather than waiting to be liberated he tried to reach the Allied lines, but was captured by German Paratroopers.
